Throat pain is a very common symptom to experience. According to an article published in the journal BMJ Clinical Evidence, “About 10% of people present to primary healthcare services with sore throat each year.” Below we review some of the common causes of throat pain.

Viral Infections

If you get a viral infection like a cold, the flu, COVID-19, mononucleosis, etc., this is commonly associated with a sore throat as a symptom. You’ll need to wait for the infection to clear on its own, though rest and hydration can help.

Bacterial Infections

Bacterial infections like strep throat can also cause throat pain, particularly when swallowing. You may also notice a lot of swelling in the tonsils. Bacterial infections need to be treated with antibiotics, which you can pick up at City Drug on East Lamar Alexander Parkway.

Allergies

Allergies to pollen, dust, mold, animal dander, etc., can cause scratchiness or even pain in the throat. Allergies can be managed by practicing avoidance of allergens, taking over-the-counter medications or undergoing immunotherapy.

Sinus Infections

Your sinuses are sets of hollow pockets located in the face behind the forehead, cheeks and eyes. When you have inflammation of the sinuses, it can cause postnasal drip, which can irritate the throat. Sinus infections sometimes clear on their own, but sometimes antibiotics or even surgery is necessary.

Acid Reflux

Acid reflux describes when acid from the stomach re-enters the esophagus, back of the throat or even the mouth. Acid reflux often happens during sleep, causing you to wake with a sore throat. In many cases, acid reflux can be managed with lifestyle modifications.

Environmental Irritants

Irritants from the environment, like cigarette smoke or chemicals, can also cause a sore throat. You should quit smoking and avoid these types of irritants to prevent a sore throat.

Laryngitis

The term laryngitis describes inflammation of the voice, usually due to overuse. The primary symptom of laryngitis is a hoarse voice, but throat pain can occur as well. Be sure to practice good vocal hygiene to prevent laryngitis.

Surgery

If you’ve had any surgery around your throat, you may experience throat pain for a while after. Your doctor will prescribe pain medications you can take to manage this side effect.
