While sinusitis usually resolves itself within 10 days, the facial pressure, nasal congestion, and other symptoms can make for a really unpleasant week. If you’re currently suffering from sinus pain, consider these tips to help yourself feel better.

Often times a sinus infection or sinus pain is caused by a cold, flu or another virus. Your body needs proper rest to help fight the infection and recover. If you find that your congestion is making it difficult to sleep, try propping yourself up on a couple of pillows to make breathing easier as you rest.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is always important, but it’s extra important to get plenty of fluids when you have sinus pain. Beverages like water, juice and sports drinks can help thin mucus and reduce your symptoms. Avoid drinking anything with alcohol or caffeine as that can dehydrate you.

Use Steam or Humidity

Taking a shower or breathing in steam from a warm bowl of water can help to ease sinus pain and open up your nasal passages. Similarly, using a humidifier or vaporizer can add moisture to the air and help loosen congestion while you sleep.

Over-the-Counter Treatments

In addition to home remedies, there are several over-the-counter treatments that can help reduce your symptoms as well. Nasal sprays, decongestants, pain relievers and even antihistamines (if your sinus pain is caused by allergies) can all help. You can find these at Village Pharmacy or many other local drugstores in Blount County. Ask your doctor before trying any over-the-counter options, especially if you have pre-existing conditions or take prescription medications to make sure no interactions will occur.

Find Out What Is Causing Your Sinus Pain

If you deal with frequent sinus pain or infections, it can be helpful to determine the cause so that you can take steps to fix it. For example, if you find that your sinus pain is related to allergies, try to minimize exposure to your triggers. Additionally, some people have issues like nasal polyps or a deviated septum which can make sinus infections more likely.
